Phentermine is a Schedule IV drug prescribed as an appetite suppressant drug for treatment of obesity. Approved for short-term use as a treatment for obesity by the FDA since 1959, in combination with behavioral modification, caloric restriction and exercise. It both prevents hunger and improves your energy level while maintaining a low calorie diet. Double Blind Clinical Trials have demonstrated that the group taking phentermine lost twice as much weight compared to placebo group in a 14wk period.

Most side effects of phentermine are mild to moderate in intensity. Short-term phentermine administration induced significant weight reduction and reduction of waist circumference without clinically problematic adverse events in relatively healthy obese people.
Common side effects include dry mouth and difficulty sleeping. You should drink plenty of fluids and always take the medication in the morning to help reduce these side effects.

No, Fen-Phen was a combination pill that included fenfluramine in addition to phentermine. It demonstrated remarkable weight reduction effects, but the FDA removed fenfluramine from the market in September 1997, due to successive reports about the serious side effects of valvular heart disease and primary pulmonary hypertension.
There have been scarce reports about serious side effects for phentermine alone.
